In a SunLife poll of 3,000 people aged over 50, property was the number one desired purchase on their ‘bucket list’, while purchasing a holiday home took the fifth spot.
Research from SunLife suggests that over 50s are keen to make the most of their remaining years, with travel, buying a new home and learning a new language at the top of their bucket lists. But the cold reality of the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on attitudes to international travel means millions of Brits may not take their holidays abroad this year and replace it with a staycation in the UK this year.
Other top purchase goals were cars, boats and jewellery, while many cited holiday destinations such as Australia and America as being among their goals. Other bucket list goals for over 50s include trying lobster, watching their home nation win the World Cup and reading War and Peace.
In the category of what these individuals wanted to achieve, financial security came second, below happiness. SunLife reported a mix of ambitions among the 3,000 people in its survey. They range from wanting to see the Northern Lights and visiting popular destinations such as New York and Graceland, to helping their children and grandchildren get a good start in life.
Ian Atkinson, marketing director at SunLife, said: “For many, 50 is a real milestone age; people tend to look back and take stock of everything they’ve done or achieved so far and then look forward to all the things they still want to do, and apparently for most people, that is go on a dream holiday!
“Sadly, for most, that isn’t possible at the moment, so it might be that over 50s need to look at some of their other bucket list goals for now. High on the list is bettering themselves, either by quitting bad habits, or starting new good ones. So while holidays may be off the table, lockdown could provide a good opportunity to quit smoking, or start running or even write a book!”
